Anytime the sea is mentioned, thoughts land on Fire Island, where I have spent many weeks and long weekends since infancy.
The dunes there are of particular importance given recent storms like Sandy, Irene, and unnamed Nor’ Easters. Every year, this Fire Islander takes part in the community effort to install a dune fence over Memorial Day weekend. The first shot captures just a little bit of this past May’s fence. Finger crossed that this barrier helps to keep the sea at bay during the next storm season.

I’ve told friends for years that if there’s such a thing as reincarnation I want to come back as beloved pug Eloise. I can’t think of any being that has a more carefree life, plus her 14th birthday is on Saturday, so this post is in honor of this very spoiled pug.
