Today’s project was to transform an old book into something new by cutting, drawing, gluing, and so on.
Not owning any books I was willing to destroy even in the name of creativity, this took a bit of brainstorming. Then, one of my first books about pugs came to mind. I was given two copies of Clara: The Story of the Pug Who Ruled My Life shortly after Eloise arrived. It’s a must-read for any pug owner, and Eloise enjoyed it, too, while she was teething. It is the only book she nibbled on at all, though she also went through the New York Times on occasion. Thus, Eloise had already transformed the book from an ordinary piece of nonfiction to a chew toy in 1999.
Wanting to leave my own mark for this project, I decided to highlight and count the number of times that the word pug was mentioned in the book. My guess was that it would be about 365, a fitting approximation.
“Pug” appeared in Clara 413 times. Here’s an example of what each page now looks like.
